Teeth sensitivity is a common issue that many of us experience at some point, what many of us don’t realise is that we don’t have to just live with it. Speaking with one of our dentists about your sensitivity issues is the first step to a resolution.
We are an Exeter based dentist and our practice is located in the heart of the city, which makes us readily available to many.
Our dentists will begin by exploring the cause of the sensitivity, ruling out a hole in any of your teeth; which would require a simple filling in order to fix. Failing this, if the issue is found to be caused by hot drinks or hot food then further investigation will be needed. One cause could be gum recession – the shrinking back of your gums exposes the sensitive dentine beneath your enamel.
There are ways to spot the signs of gum recession, using a mirror to take a look at your teeth. Searching to see if there is evidence of a creamy area of your tooth near to the gum line, this can be a good indication of recession. It is more common in some people, this is due to the position of teeth within their jawbone. Teeth located in the middle of the jawbone are less likely to be at risk from gum recession. Whereas, teeth located on the edge are more likely. Speaking to one of our dentists can be a good way to understand your teeth and the steps you can take to reduce the chances of your gums receding; this being said gum recession is often part of the natural ageing process.
A final leading factor of sensitivity can be due to a poor brushing technique, missing the same spots when brushing can lead to a build-up of plaque, which in turn leads to gum inflammation. We strongly suggest using an electric toothbrush, the different options of electric brushes can help you to make sure that your regime is cleaning all teeth to a high standard. Further to this, there are also specific sensitive toothpastes and you should also look for toothpastes high in both fluoride and potassium nitrate; both can work to tackle teeth sensitivity.
Hopefully, we have given you some insight into overcoming sensitive teeth, getting in contact with us for more information and to book an appointment with one of our dentists is also highly advisable, if you find yourself suffering from sensitivity.
